Item Description
Following the NYC Democratic Convention July 13-16 in Madison Square Garden, Clinton and Gore the next day launched their campaign via bus into the industrial mid-Atlantic states accompanied by wives, staff and 130 journalists in an eight bus caravan. The first day on the road as the nominees, they stopped at a GE plant in Camden, NJ, a United Steel Workers hall in Coatesville, PA, and rolled into York, PA hours behind schedule to spend the night at the Yorktowne Hotel where a thinning crowd welcomed them. Newsman Harry McLaughlin , persistent as ever in his pursuit of stories and autographs, took these photos which Clinton and Gore signed later. Some photos have McLaughlin notations on the reverse from his use of them in his columns. First is 8x10" with hotel sign in bkg. Clinton signed in black felt tip pen "To Harry - Best Wishes - Bill Clinton 9/92." Gore signed in gold paint pen "To Harry With Best Wishes - Al Gore. Pen has skipped a bit, but remains legible, with about 80% present. Next is 4x6.5" of Gore with hotel staff. Clearly signed "Al Gore." Next is 8x10" of Harry and another man speaking to Clinton after an early morning run. Harry wears his 4x5.5" "Press - Clinton Gore Caravan" paper tag that comes in this lot. 12 additional photos, mostly 3.5x5" taken that night or the next morning. These include Clinton/Gore in casual clothes with hotel staff, four with Clinton, one with Gore, three of Hillary, one of Tipper with Hillary. There are two letters that relate to the photos. One is signed "Harris" from PA. Senator Harris Wofford who appears in one photo and thanks Harry for a copy. The other is from Al Gore, simply signed "Al" and dated Oct. 23, 1992 thanking Harry and mentioning enclosed autographed picture he requested. All Exc.-Mint. Harry McLaughlin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
