Item Description
12.5x14" spiral bound hardcover contains limited edition set from 1949. Compiled by Norman Granz. Jazz record producer, promoter and label owner Granz put this lavish set together “In An Attempt To Present Today’s Jazz Scene In Terms Of The Visual, The Written Word And The Auditory,” according to his essay in the liner notes. Downbeat Magazine called this "Probably The Most Remarkable Record Album Ever Issued." Bound like a book W/gold stamped cloth boards, the set includes six 12” 78 rpm discs, featuring original tracks by Duke Ellington, Neil Hefti, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Willie Smith, Machito, Bud Powell, George Hardy, and Ralph Burns. An essay by Granz accompanies each disc. There are 30 high quality photograph prints on glossy paper, most by noted photographer Gjon Mili. The subjects include Duke Ellington, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Max Roach with Bud Powell, Louis Armstrong with Roy Eldridge, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Krupa, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie with Duke Ellington, Billie Holliday and others. The title page is hand numbered 2987 of 5000 and signed by Granz in blue ink, opposite a fold out image by legendary jazz illustrator David Stone Martin. The back half of the pages/photos have noticeable moisture staining and surface paper wear because of this along the bottom edges. Front half is in no way affected. All pages do show some aging as does the cover. Overall VG/Fine while records are Exc. An impressive set signed by a true legend in the world of Jazz. From the Richard Merkin Collection.
