Item Description
First photo is 6.5x8.5" glossy with close-up image of Luque in Cincinnati Reds uniform c.1920. Reverse side has photo credit ink stamp by Paul Thompson and additional ink stamp of Charles M. Conlon of the Evening Telegram Newspaper in N. Y. Photo has a few scattered hairline surface ripples around edges just visible in reflected light. VF. Second photo is 8x10" mat finish with close-up image of Luque as manager of Habana Lions in uniform c.early 1950s. Reverse side has credit ink stamp in Spanish “Foto De: Newton Estape”. Blank margin edges have a few faint moisture marks and reverse side has some lt. aging but image area is crisp and VF. Adolfo Luque (1890-1957) played winter baseball in the Cuban League from 1912 to 1945 and was a longtime manager in the league. He pitched for the Boston Braves in 1914-15, the Cincinnati Reds in 1918-29, the Brooklyn Robins in 1930-31 and the New York Giants in 1932-35. He was also a coach with the New York Giants for seven seasons. He was National League ERA Champion in 1923 and 1925 and the 1923 National League Wins Champion as well as National League shutout leader three times. He managed various Cuban teams until the mid-1950s and is also a Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer. Nice pair for two stages of his illustrious career.
