Item Description
8.5x11-1/8" typewritten letter dated December 11 on "Negro American League Association" letterhead written by Dr. J. B. Martin to "Mr. Quinn" inviting him to a meeting of the league in Chicago noting "We Are Extending You A Cordial Invitation To Meet With Us As We Are Anxious To Have You To Sponsor A Baseball Club In Detroit And To Become A Member Of The Negro American League". Secretarial signature. Upper left side lists "League Members 1940 Chicago American Giants, Kansas City Monarchs, Memphis Red Sox, Birmingham Black Barons, Cleveland Bears, St. Louis Stars, Toledo Crawfords." Letter has two horizontal folds as mailed with a few minor creases. Bright and VF. The League was founded in 1937 and originally included the Detroit Stars who only played that year. The Negro American League did not get a Detroit team at that time despite this letter's request.
