Nov.-Dec. 1943 Golden Age issue has classic cover image of boys drawing sketches of Superman with boy sitting at large drawing board with Superman using pen to autograph art "Your Friend, Superman-". Cover has been signed in fine point black Sharpie pen in 1.75x2" area at upper right "To Charlie & Joan, Best Wishes, Jack Burnley". Book contains four Superman stories including one which is a take off on super hero comic books involving "Geezer King Of The Comic Books The Strongest Man On Earth At Any Newsstand 10¢" as well as patriotic story "I Sustained The Wings!" prepared in cooperation with the Army Air Forces technical training command. Issue also includes promo page showing eight other DC comic book covers including Batman #19, Wonder Woman #6, All Star Comics #18, All-Flash #12, Green Lantern #9, Boy Commandos #4, and Leading Comics. First story has 2.25x2-5/8" clip from one panel, white margins of several inside pages have a few barely noticeable light spots from aging but issue is otherwise Fine. Jack Burnley (1911-2006) began his career as a sports cartoonist with King Features Syndicate and in 1929 was the youngest artist to have a syndicated feature. In 1938 he began doing single page sports fillers for DC Comics and became the first artist to work independently of Bob Kane on Batman and Joe Shuster on Superman. His first published assignment was the cover illustration for New York World's Fair 1940 and he also worked on the Superman and Batman comic strip and co-created the super hero Starman with writer Gardner Fox which first appeared in April 1941. He penciled over 100 covers for DC Comics and left DC and the comic book field in 1947 to return to newspaper sports cartooning. Signature was obtained in person by the consignor. A classic cover with facsimile signature of Superman and actual signature of his artist. Comes with Hake's COA. See item #2686 that features artwork used in this issue.
