Item Description
Dated May 1, 1898. 9" wide by 9.25" tall overall with incised text "Our Glorious Battleships" on lid and bottom. U.S. Silverplate Co. No. 57 stamped on underside. Front and back each have 6 hooks for hanging spoons. Lot includes 12 silverplated spoons in sizes ranging from 4" to 4.25" long. Each has relief image on bowl. Five have image of a named General or Admiral at top of handle with various images on bowls. Bowl images include two of Morro Castle with same design including General Fitzhugh Lee on handle, one with flagship "New York" with "Admiral Sampson" on handle, one with U.S. Infantry camp in Cuba with commander "General Miles" on handle and one with flagship "Brooklyn" with "Admiral Schley" on handle. Seven remaining spoons have bold image of Battleship Maine in bowl. Of these, two are alike, other five are different and one has image of "Captain Sigsbee on handle, other six have plain handles. Spoon holder and several spoons have darkened finish but patina could be cleaned to NM appearance if desired. Also included is a boxed set of six 4.25" souvenir spoons. Box has lt. wear and original cloth lining. Fine. Crown Silver Plate. Images duplicate above listed with the addition of Admiral Dewey and Flagship Olympia. Spoons show moderate tarnish but could be cleaned to NM appearance. Elaborate designs.
