Item Description
15.75x15.75" high quality wood frame with archival mat which has three openings. Upper right holds 4.25" hardtack biscuit which includes handwritten text in ink "Compliments Of Col. D.B. Case 4th Reg. Pa. Vol." along with names of two privates which are partially illegible and town name Mt. Gretna Pa. Text also includes "Co. 1 State Finable Penna Volunteers Sunday-May 8, 1898" signed R.S. Oster. Left side has opening revealing 3.75x5.5" cabinet photo of large brick building with "R.S. Oster & Bros. Smithshop" sign on front with two workers standing in doorway. Photo has full margins although matted close to image. Lower right has opening holding 3.75" tall match safe with "R.S. Oster" name in center along with nice Art Nouveau design on front. Although not visible from front, match safe is from Colombian Exposition with building image on back. Rubin Smith Oster graduated June 27, 1890 from the Male School in Lancaster, PA. Hardtack has darkened with age. Fine. Other two items are Exc. Interesting group ready for display.
