Item Description
1.5" button with Irwin-Hodson paper. In 1917 there was region-wide strike in the lumber industry and the strike threatened the production of spruce wood ideal for airplane construction and other wartime needs. The strike began that summer spurred by the I.W.W. with thousands of men walking off the job demanding better living conditions, better pay and an 8-hour day. Eventually the Department of War created two organizations. One was an army unit putting enlisted loggers and mill workers to work in the production of spruce products while the other as represented by this button was the civilian version known as the "Loyal Legion Of Loggers And Lumbermen", thus the four letter L's showing at the top of this button as well as the text on the bottom "Authorized By The/US/Secretary Of War." Superb example N. Mint, displaying Mint. Scarce.
