Item Description
6.5x8.5" glossy dated February 12, 1946 in pencil on back shows Wright pitching in Negro League team Homestead Grays uniform. Top corners have staple holes and bottom left edge has margin wear but photo is otherwise glossy and Fine. Wright played briefly in the International League of baseball’s minor leagues in 1946 and was on the roster of the Montreal Royals at the same time as Jackie Robinson. He might have been the first black player to break the baseball color barrier but was demoted from Montreal and returned the next season to the Negro Leagues. Wright barnstormed with Robinson’s “All-Star“ squad at the end of the 1946 season and rejoined the Grays for 1947 making the All-Star team and winning eight games. He retired after the 1948 season.
