Item Description
Title translates to Monthly Bulletins for Lithography. c. 1902-1904. 11.75x16" hardcover published by Bruno Herling Berlin-New York. Covers have fabric ties at side to hold loose pages in place. Contains 98 sheets, each 11.75x15-3/8", including over 40 with full page designs printed on front sides. Fantastic Art Nouveau style images include girl carrying wreath, pretty woman on beach smoking cigarette, cranes with human characteristics, artistic flowers and lions, woman in winter snow, sailboat on high sea, fish swimming through reeds and one sheet plus duplicate sheet titled "Program" with showgirl sitting on stage holding up article of clothing. Artists include Werkstatt, Moritz, Christophe, Wulff, Tippel, Knab, Schnebel, Wendtlendt, Looschen, Gebhardt, Hoffmann. Inside front cover has applied paper sticker over text "Loan Collection of Rodman Wanamaker". Rodman was the 2nd son of Phila. department store founder, John Wanamaker and his main claim to fame was financing sea plane development in 1913. This type of plane is still important in military and commercial aviation. Covers have scattered age wear with a few color rubs and some dust soil. VG. Unbound pages are becoming a bit brittle around blank margin edges but overall Fine/VF. Image areas on most are Exc. Multiple images are suitable for framing. Incredible high quality printing which had only recently been perfected when this portfolio was published. Exceptional.
