Item Description
17-1/8x19” wood frame has double archival mat with 7-7/8x9-7/8” opening with wonderful India ink and watercolor painting of young Indian girl looking at viewer with her smiling dog nearby with desert landscape in bkg. c. 1930. Lower right has faint inscription “Drawn For Margo Elbik by J. Swinnerton.” Blank margins are a bit tanned with age, o/w Exc. Ready for display. James Swinnerton (1875-1974) was one of America’s first great early comic strip artists, primarily known for Little Jimmy. He moved to the American Southwest in 1903 and began doing the Canyon Kiddies for Good Housekeeping magazine in 1922. He went on to become a successful Southwest landscape painter. Unique combination of Swinnerton’s love for the Southwest and his cartooning ability.
