Item Description
9.75x15-3/8” wooden frame has 8.75x15-3/8” opening revealing India ink original sports cartoon art of famous negro league pitcher Satchel Paige. Right side has large image of him standing full figure with text “Got His Nickname, ‘Satchelfoot’ From His Size 12 Dogs” as little man looks at large feet. Left side has 3 different scenes with captions. First shows Paige having just thrown ball saying “And Just Getting Warmed Up” with caption “He Has Been In Big Time Negro Base Ball 20 Years.” Second has image of Joe DiMaggio saying “Never Saw More Speed In The Majors” with text caption “He fanned Joe DiMaggio Four Times In Two Exhibition Games In 1937.” Third shows him with large suitcase with stickers from various countries including Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama, Honolulu, Venezuela, Mexico with caption “He’s Been Around.” Art is signed in ink by cartoonist Gene Mack at lower left. c. 1947. Gene Mack began working for the “Boston Globe” around 1912 and went on to great fame as a sports cartoonist. He was known and admired by most prominent athletes of the world including Babe Ruth and Ted Williams. Margins of art have lt. dust soil with some lt. aging and wear. Artboard VG but most of image area is Exc. Professionally framed. Wonderful graphics. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
