Item Description
First is 3.5x5-3/8” real photo postcard titled “Western Bloomer Girls St. Augustine Fla.” Shows team lined up in front of open air motor vehicle with fringe on top. Reverse side is postmarked Apr. 13, 1910 Gainesville, Fl. and addressed to recipient in Chicago. Text includes “Dear Mary – How Do You Like This? Had This Taken In St. Augustine, Florida.” Signed, Hattie. Second postcard is 3-3/8x5-5/8” titled “The Western Bloomer Girls – Ladies Champion Base Ball Club Watervliet, Mich.” showing female and male members in uniform with some wearing gloves and baseball equipment in foreground. Postmarked June 1912 Grand Rapids Michigan. Addressed in pencil to recipient in Johnson City, Tenn. Text includes “Had A Fine Time The 30th Of May, Was At The Ball Game.” Both cards have trace of lt. dust soil, a few lt. handling creases mostly just visible in reflected light. Both Fine. The Western Bloomer Girls were founded by Maud Nelson, one of the most successful female players who eventually became a team owner. In 1911 she created the Western Bloomer Girls Club which was a huge success. Wonderful images. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
