Item Description
16x24.75x19” tall heavy cardboard lidded shipping container for unidentified clothing maker. c. 1930s. Carton lid has 8.5x21.75” three color paper label with Popeye saying “I Sez I Yam What I Yam Because I Yam What I Yam.” Other side of label has Rough House the cook growling at Popeye. Label reads “The Popeye Line Of Hats & Caps For Young Men-Boys-Girls-Kiddies. Exclusively Licensed By King Features Syndicate, Inc.” Side of lid has manufacturer label. Both have been applied to sturdy, thick, shiny surface cardboard. Lid has all corners split. Front side panel of box bottom has 9.75x21.5” long pennant-shaped label with repeat text about contents within and portrait images of Popeye, Olive Oyl and full body image of Popeye at bottom with King Features Syndicate, Inc. text. Both labels show moderate aging and some wear with small chips at edges. VG overall. Side manufacturer’s label with Lot/Style/Doz. spaces shows moderate wear and is VG. Carton shows edge/corner tip wear aside from splits on lid but retains its shape and is Fine. Scarce. This is the actual example shown in The Price Guide To Pop Culture Collectibles by Ted Hake and comes with Hake’s COA.
