Item Description
First is 3.5x5.5” real photo postcard. c. 1930s. Johnny Eck was an American freak show performer born with the appearance that he was missing the lower half of his torso. Eck is best known today for his role in Todd Browning’s 1932 cult classic film “Freaks.” He was often billed as the amazing “Half-Boy” and “King of the Freaks.” Eck was also an actor, artist, photographer, illusionist, penny arcade owner, race car driver, swimmer, runner, animal trainer, gymnast, orchestra conductor and tightrope walker. Post card is unused. Glossy and free of handling wear. Exc. Second is 3.5x5” fold-over card of Harry T. Petry. c. 1930s fold-over printed card with oval photo of legless man in wheelchair with name below. Lengthy 3-page text of “Life Of Harry T. Petry.” Harry in his own words explains his life and illness that resulted in having both of his legs amputated. He went from a strong healthy man weighing 130 lbs. to weighing scarcely 64 lbs. Text “I Then Went To Bay View Asylum But Stayed Only A Short Time When I Came To Westminster To The Anchor Hotel Where I’ve Been Ever Since.” He explains the day-to-day pain that he endures and has been rendered “penniless” and entirely dependent upon charity. Final text implies the request for a hand-out. Minor aging, o/w VF. An interesting pair.
