Item Description
Pair of 1.25” buttons both with backpapers naming W&H as maker but also both with large text reading “Read The Dispatch Baseball Extra ‘All The Dope’.” The buttons are promoting publication of the Columbus Dispatch headed by sports editor Ernest Barnard, who later became president of the American League. The artwork on the button is by Billy Ireland, a cartoonist who worked for the Dispatch doing both editorial cartoons and a Sunday feature called “The Passing Show.” The buttons are possibly promoting the local team Columbus Senators, but more likely, given the black and yellow colors, refer to the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Button reading “’Nuthin’ But The Pennint Fer Mine’ Teck Haskins” has quite extensive crack lines in the celluloid although it still displays totally clean. The other button is essentially Mint and shows character with his dog with rim text “’Yaller Bud Demands The Pennant-Are You With Us?’ Teck Haskins.” A rare local issue. From the Richard Merkin Collection. Comes with Hake’s COA.
