Item Description
This fascinating pair of items relates to America’s 1950s battle against Communism, specifically “Radio Free Europe,” a CIA-sponsored operation begun in 1950. It took until 1967 to confirm the early rumors of CIA involvement in these supposedly “privately operated” radio stations. The propaganda effort was directed not only overseas but at American citizens as well through the program whose title is displayed on one of these items as “Crusade For Freedom.” Both of these items are from the mid-50s. One is a 15/16” embossed metal badge with copper luster showing a microphone of “RFE” and reading “Newspaperboys/Radio Free Europe.” This is essentially Mint. Second is 2.75x3-1/8” stiff cardboard die-cut into Liberty Bell shape with bar pin on back along with name of maker Green Duck. Very slight creasing near the top but totally clean. Both of these are uncirculated examples from the Green Duck Button Co. archive. Comes with Hake’s COA.
