Item Description
1.25” issued to “Member” of his “Club” with American Art Works backpaper c. 1920. He was famous for record setting point-to-point drives, often sponsored by motorcycle or car manufacturers. He was victor in the 1909 first race held at newly-built Indianapolis Speedway. He derived his nickname from 1914 transcontinental drive with name derived from Cannon Ball train of Illinois Central made famous by Casey Jones. His NY-LA 1933 drive of 53.5 hours stood as a record for nearly 40 years. He later became the first Commissioner of NASCAR. Only the third we’ve seen. Exc. and displays Mint although with single tiny raised cello bump on left center bkg. just a hair noticeable to the touch.
