Item Description
1.25” with outstanding brilliant multicolor which includes small illustration of Teddy Roosevelt in Rough Rider uniform holding saber aloft and riding a white horse. Button has a tiny flaw much over-ridden by its positive aspects. Above TR’s head is a faint and minute 1/32” age dot. Just above McKinley’s shoulder at the left is a similar dot about 1/16”. Both dots are hardly apparent unless the button is studied very closely. On the positive side, unlike so many examples of this design, the centering is about 99.9% perfect. This fact alone is a true rarity for this design. In addition, it is complete with its Baltimore Badge backpaper which is original, although the back rim has the “Phelps 1899” patent date, because the Baltimore paper is beneath the crimped celluloid visible by peering under the edge of the reverse collet. In addition, the front celluloid surface of the button is incredibly free of surface wear of any significance and displays with a mirror-like gloss. Button is in Hake’s 2004 Revised Prices at $1,200. This example which certainly displays at least as N. Mint opens very conservatively.
