Item Description
Three buttons 7/8” or a little smaller all with W&H backpapers. The first shows seal of the state of “Nebraska” with rim text “Woman’s Council Of Defense.” Second reads “Woman’s Committee Council Of National Defense.” This was a government established advisory committee headed by suffragist Dr. Anna Shaw, designed to coordinate women’s war efforts. The third button reads “Women’s Apparel Unit/Women’s Oversee Hospitals, U.S.A.” At the women suffrage convention of Dec. 1917, the Overseas Hospitals Plan was presented to the convention by Mrs. Charles Tiffany. The National Suffrage Association gave support of $125,000 for a hospital in France. The first group sailed Feb., 1918 to establish a hospital for refugees in the devastated war zone area where many were treated including victims of gas attacks.
