Lot of 5 including 4 typically 8x10” glossy bw promotional photos, 3 of which have Gale Inc. Management notation. One features caricature cartoon image of Webb that was often featured on his drum kit, another shows him at elaborate drum set with “Chick Webb The King Of The Drums” text below picture. Another shows the Chick Webb Orchestra in concert. Another shows the orchestra with their singer Ella Fitzgerald and has additional text “Chick Webb And His Orchestra Featuring Ella Fitzgerald.” Performing in New York City clubs through the late 1920s, Webb’s band becoming the Savoy Ballroom’s house band in 1931. Regarded as one of the best band leaders and drummers of the “Swing” movement from the first “King Of Swing.” Webb is often noted for giving Ella Fitzgerald her start as a young vocalist in 1935. Promotional photos have handling wear with creases at corners and margins. VF overall. Lot also comes with 9x12” “Spinnin’ The Webb” sheet music published by Famous Music Corp. ©1938. Cover of sheet music features bluetone photo image of Webb behind his drums with inset image of Ella Fitzgerald. Scattered aging and handling wear with creases at corners. Fine-. All publicity photos are c. 1937-1938. Nice group from one of the all-time Swing greats, from late in his career (Webb died at just 34 years of age in 1939). From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
