Item Description
7.75x9.75” fragile sheet of onion skin paper contains mixed-media painting of Davies, an actress of the silent and early sound film era (active 1917-1937 in film). Davies is just as well known for her relationship to William Randolph Hearst and her high society living as for her acting roles. c. early 1930s painting by Orry-Kelly, the prolific Hollywood costume and set designer. Kelly worked on such films as “The Maltese Falcon, Casa Blanca, Arsenic And Old Lace, Harvey, Oklahoma!, Some Like It Hot.” Orry-Kelly won 3 Academy Awards for costume design and was nominated for a fourth. During World War II, he wrote a column for the International News Service called “Hollywood Fashion Parade.” Of note, International News Service was owned by William Randolph Hearst, Davies’ lover. Orry-Kelly has signed in lower right corner of painting. Painting, given it being painted on onion skin paper, has some handling wear resulting in a 1.25” tear at top center margin and .75” tear along mid-right margin. These have archival tape repairs to reverse. Bottom left margin has sliver/chip off and bottom right corner and upper left corner have tiny chips missing from margins. These defects would mat out for a Fine display. Striking portrait. Orry-Kelly’s movie-related art is scarce and desirable.
