Item Description
"Puck" magazine May 5, 1880 edition center page has been matted to 11.5x18.25" featuring the J. Keppler cartoon "The Decadence Of The Wizard Of Menlo Park - From The Phonograph To Polyform." Edison is depicted at center in robes wearing dunce-like hat playing shuffling cups trick w/text "Now, Gentlemen, I Will Show You The Great Invention Trick. Here's Your Money, And Here's Your Chair; Now You See Them And Now You Don't See 'Em! That's The Little Joker." On either side of Edison is man w/telephone receiver and inset scene showing "The Edison Of The Past" hard at work on inventions w/phonograph machine and pages w/"Telegraph" and "Electric Pen" written on them. Other sides shows "The Edison Of The Present" showing Edison relaxing, smoking a cigarette and pushing button of "Wires To Wall St." Scattered about this scene are papers marked "Stocks" and "Mining Stocks." The left shows smokey woman holding lightbulb before amazed crowd and surrounded by "Press" ducks, other side shows "Menlo Park" guiding light blinding men carrying bags of money into water which they struggle to stay above. Art accompanied anti-Edison article about his ties to unscrupulous Wall Street traders pushing stock issues for some of his more far-fetched inventions. Folded at center as initially bound in magazine. Page has been matted w/artist Joseph Keppler's name and original publication date at top w/cartoon name at bottom. Mat is 16.5x23.25". Displays VF/Exc.
