Item Description
2-5/8" embossed pewter case with front cover that lifts off to reveal silvered mirror. DeWitt calls these "encased camp or field mirrors" and he lists five different but here is an unlisted sixth variety. Front cover has military bust facing right with inscription around "General Taylor Rough & Ready." A design of leaves surrounds the portrait but it is different than all examples shown in DeWitt. The pewter reverse also has a wreath design on the outer edge with text at the center area reading "Brevete 1844." The upper edge of the reverse has a pair of tiny openings which hold the original brass loop. At the center of the back is another tube-like opening which once anchored a pair of wires which connected the back of the case to the front of the case so that the mirror could be unfolded and then propped open. This wire is missing with just a small sliver off the bottom side edge of the case front where it was once affixed. The interior mirror has microscopic silvering dots gone but overall this is extremely minor as about 98% of the silvering remains and it is highly reflective without being clouded. Overall Fine and a rare unlisted example.
