Item Description
14x22" lightly rolled poster, one of four designs featuring photographs of renowned Civil Rights photographer Danny Lyon. Poster includes group name "Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee" plus their Atlanta, GA address showing zone number, not zip code and therefore we date poster as c. 1962 (zip codes began in 1963). Poster has scattered handling creases and two .25" or less edge tears but remains totally clean. Overall Fine but would display as Exc. if framed. SNCC began in 1960 with an $800 grant from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Some of the original student members were organizers of sit-ins at segregated lunch counters and the group played a leading role in Freedom Rides, the 1963 March on Washington, Mississippi Freedom Summer and Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. This rare poster has sold in the past for as much as $3,000 and we know of only three examples.
