Item Description
2.75x4.5" original glossy with full figure image of Johnson standing a ball field in his Grays uniform. Dates to his years with the team, 1929-30. Reverse has some staining and surface paper adhered as once scrapbook mounted. Front shows lt. handling wear but is clean and glossy w/sharp image. Fine. Johnson is considered one of the greatest third basemen in the Negro Leagues. He also played for Hilldale and Pittsburgh Crawfords. In 1929, Johnson was named the Negro Leagues Most Valuable Player by the Chicago Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier. He retired as a player in 1937 but went on to be a scout for several MLB teams. In 1954 he was hired as a spring training coach for the A's, responsible for working w/African-American players. He was inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 1975.
