Item Description
As with the previous item, this is another one-of-a-kind item for the Hall Of Fame legend. 6.5x9.5" album containing a total of 40 mostly 3x4.5" glossy photos spanning Dihigo's travels in the US and Cuba as he played baseball for the Negro League Cuban Stars and Marianao Tigers of the Cuban League. Many of the photos were taken by Dihigo himself. Many photos have player names, location and/or date notations on the margins but in an unknown hand. The front cover of the album reads "Photographs/Souvenir Atlantic City." Dihigo purchased this upon arrival in the states and photos begin with images of players from the Cuban Stars as well as rival teams Hilldale Daisies and Atlantic City Bacharach Giants. Players are shown in both baseball uniforms and suits. There are also some shots of baseball stadiums where they played and hotel facades where they stayed. The players shown and number of times they are featured, be it individually or with others is: Dihigo (4), Alejandro Oms (10), Pablo Mesa (10), Pelayo Chacon (4), Isidro Fabre (2) and once each- Luis Tiant Sr., Dick Lundy, Clint Thomas, HOFers Biz Mackey and Judy Johnson. All photos are shown online. Highlights include Dihigo in suit w/Biz & Judy in Hilldale uniforms standing full figure, Tiant full figure in Stars uniform, Lundy full figure in Giants uniform, Clint full figure catching a ball, Mesa batting, Oms full figure in Stars uniform, two slightly different shots w/four Tiger's players in uniforms and posed on a field including Dihigo & Oms. Most photos are mounted in the album, one page is loose and a few photos are loose from the pages. Photos have scattered aging, wear and tear as mounted but overall images are sharp and distinct. Photos overall VG to VF. A unique collection of previously unknown images documenting the early days of the professional career of one of baseball's greatest stars as his 1925 season unfolded in both the Negro and Cuban leagues. Personally owned and compiled by Martin Dihigo and comes w/COA signed by his son Gilberto Dihigo.
