Item Description
Original 8x10" matte finish photo that was apparently mounted at the time of issue to same size thin cardboard sheet. This photo represents one of three different known Cuban League team premiums issued early in 1923 by the Cuban newspaper "La Discusion" (as text on bottom center indicates). Additional text notes date of Jan. 1923 and photographer F. Gilbert. This Cuban Winter League team is shown in uniform on ball field. HOF members include Martin Dihigo (who was 17 at the time and this is most certainly his first image as a professional player), John Henry "Pop" Lloyd and Cristobal Torriente. Other players of note include: Adolfo Luque, Mike Gonzalez, Rafael Almeida, all Cubans who played in the Major Leagues. Also shown are Cannonball Redding (in his Bacharach Giants sweater) and Pastor Pareda (in his Cuban Stars sweater). While the photo itself is very rare and desirable, it is taken to another level due to the fact that Dihigo has signed and annotated it. All done in ink, Dihigo signed his last name above his image (he stands in back third from the left) and added in his hand the names of all the other players. Those in the back row have their names added above their image, all others are across their bodies. There are some surface paper rubs to the names of the first three standing at the left including Dihigo. All other written names are distinct. The photo itself shows wear/aging w/corner pieces missing as well as a 1" sliver from bottom margin. 3" lower left corner crease. There are 11 scattered tiny insect holes, most at lower left corner. Overall age tone but images remain sharp and bold. Overall still Good. A truly one-of-a-kind historic baseball item. Comes w/JSA LOA. Personally owned by Martin Dihigo and comes w/COA signed by his son Gilberto Dihigo.
